English football got off to the worst possible start in Europe tonight as both Manchester clubs threw away leads to leave both sides pointless after the opening round of Champions League fixtures.

United had been heavily fancied going into their game with Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven but a horror double leg break for Luke Shaw marred a tie in which Louis van Gaal’s side could not turn their dominance into victory.

Manuel Pellegrini would argue that it was much the same at the Etihad, where the Premier League leaders fell 2-1 to last season’s runners-up Juventus.

A controversial Vincent Kompany goal gave City the lead but strikes from Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata earned the Serie A champions a first win of the season.
