Chelsea earned almost as much from their participation in last season’s Champions League as beaten finalists Atletico Madrid, despite being eliminated at the round of 16 stage.

The Blues, eliminated by Paris St Germain for the second consecutive year, took home €69.2million (which equates to £62.5m at current exchange rates) whilst Atleti, beaten in the final by local rivals Real Madrid for the second time in three years, claimed just £62.9m.

Beaten semi-finalists Manchester City earned the most of any club in Europe last season, claiming £75.8m in part thanks to £42.4m from Uefa’s market pool, which assigns £458m to the Champions League participants based on the proportional value of TV markets.

Only Juventus and Roma, the only representatives from Italy in the 2015/16 group stage claimed more money from Uefa’s television earning.

Chelsea also earned over £14m more than London rivals Arsenal (£48.3m), who struggled to escape Group F after losing their first two games against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos before being eliminated at the round of 16 for the sixth season in succession, Barcelona triumphing 5-1 on aggregate.

With five representatives in the group stage, three quarter-finalists and the winners and runners up Spanish sides were afforded significantly less money from Uefa’s market pool. Atletico Madrid took less than £20m whilst neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid could take home £25m.

Demands from top clubs in Spain over broadcasting revenue pressured Uefa into agreeing a new deal for the Champions League which will guarantee Italy, England, Spain and Germany four spots in the group stages.

The revenue split will also be revamped to favour clubs that have enjoyed previous success in the Champions League.
