Under-fire Ronaldo ‘still improving’

Cristiano Ronaldo insists he is still improving as a player despite criticism of his performances for Portugal and has vowed to help them get past Denmark today to save their Euro 2012 campaign.

Ronaldo enjoyed an astonishing season for Real Madrid, scoring more than 60 goals as his club beat Barcelona to La Liga title. But his Portugal career continues to be rocky.

Often let down by his team-mates and by a lack of depth in Portuguese football — especially when it comes to strikers — he could no nothing to prevent them losing 1-0 against Germany in their opening game and suffered criticism as a result.

But the former Manchester United man says what the critics haven’t noticed is how much he has added to his game over the years.

“I know that I am improving all the time,” he said. “I’m certainly more mature as a player than when I was at United for instance. I have progressed.

“But I’m still ambitious and I won’t settle for this. I want to improve more and more. And this is a good place to show it.”

Critics claim Ronaldo will never be able to be compared to the greatest legends of world football unless he performs at his very best at a major international tournament. But the winger says he only has eyes on beating Denmark.

He said: “Comparisons with other players do not bother me. I just want to win. I’ve done it with my clubs and perhaps now I can do it with my country. We were unlucky against Germany. Now we need to win.

“We have to play Denmark and Holland to put it right. I don’t think we’re inferior to those teams.”
