Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal open to ‘wonderful challenge’ to stay in football after World Cup

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal hasn’t ruled out continuing to work in football after the World Cup.

Van Gaal, who is 71 and was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year, was appointed by the Dutch in August 2021 after Frank de Boer left in the wake of the Euros.

Before that, Van Gaal had been out of work since 2016 after leaving Manchester United and he had not expected to take another job.

The 71-year-old accepted the Netherlands post, taking charge of his country for the third time in his career, and he hasn’t ruled out staying in football when his contract expires after the World Cup.

Asked if he knows his next team, Van Gaal said: “No. Actually I will stop being a head coach.

“I am only doing this for the country, for the Netherlands, because it was an emergency situation and I committed to that.

“But never say never, because we have a wonderful example, Dick Advocaat. I think he was also trainer of Iraq; I am not quite sure about that.

“But we have an example in the Netherlands and this coach is older than I am, and just recently he took on a job at the second level.

“If I am presented with a wonderful challenge, if there is a country which I think, oh that is a marvellous challenge, it could well be that I perhaps continue to work as a head coach for a bit.

“But I am 71 years old. Of course I look marvellous, I look incredibly young.”
