Brendan Rodgers claims there’s a conspiracy against him after Liverpool defeat Aston Villa

Brendan Rodgers admitted it was ‘interesting to note the ‘hysteria’ surrounding Liverpool’s start to the season, before claiming there are ‘external forces’ at work undermining his position at the club.

His comments came after Liverpool edged out Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday, winning the match 3-2 with Daniel Sturridge scoring his first goals for the club since March after returning from injury.

The win sees Liverpool occupy seventh spot in the Premier League table, with three wins from their opening seven matches, including two defeats and two draws.

Following another summer of heavy spending at Anfield, Rodgers’ position has come under serious scrutiny in recent weeks, magnified by losses to rivals Manchester United, and the 3-0 home defeat to West Ham.

The Reds required a penalty shoot-out to dispose of League Two side Carlisle United in midweek, but Rodgers is adamant that he and his side are ‘staying calm’ while external forces try to rock the boat.

"I am pretty confident that there is a group of people that don't want me here to be the manager," he told reporters.

"In all competitions, we've lost less games than Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal. Lost two games which is equivalent to Tottenham, Manchester United and ourselves have lost two. But obviously the hysteria around ourselves is obviously interesting to note.

“For myself and the players we are staying very calm, working very hard every day knowing that we will get our rewards for it and today they got their rewards. So I'm delighted for them and the response was fantastic.
