Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a stunning goal as England Under-19s beat Germany this weekend despite playing much of the second half with 10 men.

Sheyi Ojo put the Young Lions ahead before the break, but moments after the restart right-back Jonjoe Kenny was dismissed and Prince-Osei Owusu pulled the hosts level from the spot.

Aidy Boothroyd's side, however, found another gear as Chelsea's Dominic Solanke put England in front before Maitland-Niles' stunner doubled the advantage with 64 minutes gone.

Germany grabbed one back before full-time, but Boothroyd's 10 men held on during a nervy final 10 minutes to record an impressive victory.

"The whole development programme needs games and situations like this,” the former Watford boss told TheFA.com.

"This is what we are in it for, it's not just playing foreign opposition it's about what happens in games and other sorts of things that you can't control and have to learn to deal with

"It was a really good performance and it took so much to get it. We had to score goals, we had to defend for our lives against a really good German team. We had to ride our luck at times but in the end I thought we deserved what we got because of the character we showed."
