Tottenham fans know what they want: a new centre back.

Well, that’s what they told us when asked them which area of the pitch Mauricio Pochettino should address this summer.

Last weekend’s defeat to Stoke City will have done little to have changed that opinion. Vlad Chiriches, Spurs’ much-maligned Romanian defender, was given his marching orders after just 51 minutes of their 3-0 defeat at the Britannia.

But he’s not alone.

Summer signing Federico Fazio, despite having made just 29 appearances for the club since arriving from Sevilla, has already been sent off twice.

Spurs have conceded 53 goals in the Premier League this season – that’s more than any other side in the top half of the table – and, more damming, equal to relegated Burnley, and four more than Hull City.

But all is not lost. Tottenham’s academy appears to producing another breed of defender at White Hart Lane. A goalscoring one.

Jack Roles, from Spurs’ Under-16’s, took ‘defence to attack’ to new heights with a memorable goal against rivals West Ham.

Collecting the ball inside his own half, the centre back proceeded up field before a quick one-two and a feint past the Hammers goalkeeper saw the ball end up in the net. Superb.
