Watford are ready to recruit up to four players during the January window as they attempt to arrest an alarming run of form.

The club’s Italian owners are ready to back Walter Mazzarri by bringing in a holding midfielder, a forward, a wide attacker and a creative midfielder.

Mazzarri’s future has been questioned in recent weeks but - as things stand - Standard Sport understands he retains the confidence of owner Gino Pozzo, even though Watford have lost four of their last five league matches.

When the Pozzos handed Mazzarri a three-year contract, the aim in the first season was simply to stay in the Premier League.

At this stage, Gino Pozzo and Mazzarri still speak regularly and have a strong working relationship.

Despite their poor recent results, Watford remain seven points clear of 18th-placed Sunderland, and have nine first-team players absent through injury.

Watford have struggled in front of goal - their top scorer, midfielder Etienne Capoue, has five goals - and are without injured pair Roberto Pereyra and Stefano Okaka.
