Watford climbed to ninth place in the Premier League table with a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough this afternoon.

Jose Holebas' superb strike proved to be the winning goal but the left-back's heroics did not save him from an ear bashing at full time.

Etienne Capoue was involved in a heated argument with his Greek teammate just moments after referee Roger East had blown the final whistle at the Riverside Stadium.

While the rest of Walter Mazzarri's side celebrated their second away victory of the season Holebas and Capoue spent a couple of minutes bickering before going over to clap the Hornets travelling supporters.

The source of the players' debate remains unclear with Capoue appearing to be incensed that the defender had pushed forward during the closing stages, gesturing with his hand to suggest Holebas had not taken time to think about his actions.

However, despite the disagreement, Watford captain Troy Deeney was delighted his side put another three points on the board.

"We battled. We fought for every ball, first and second ball, and made it more difficult," he told BBC Sport.

"We've just got to keep going, fight for a level of consistency. We've got to make sure we keep a level performance that's high enough to be in the Premier League."

Watford travel to struggling Swansea next weekend and victory in south Wales could see Mazzarri's side climb towards the Europa League places.
