Watford promise United match will go-ahead despite pitch problems

11 April 2012

Watford insist tomorrow night's Championship match with Sheffield United will go ahead despite problems with the under-soil heating at Vicarage Road.

Saturday's game against Swansea had to be called off after the system malfunctioned, causing the pitch to freeze in overnight sub-zero
temperatures.

New parts ordered to correct the fault were not due to arrive until today, and with temperatures expected to drop close to freezing again tonight, there are fears the game against the Blades could come under threat.

But in a statement Watford said: "If the repairs on the under-soil heating today aren't successful the club have put together a contingency plan to hire equipment to make the pitch playable.

"The club would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused, but would like to reassure supporters that everything is being done to ensure the pitch is playable and safe."

The postponement was the second at Vicarage Road in recent weeks, and the club's supporters are still waiting to see Malky Mackay's men in action at home this year.

Watford's chief executive officer Julian Winter said: "We are determined that tomorrow's match versus Sheffield United goes ahead and are doing all we can to achieve this.

"I know Malky Mackay and all the players were looking forward to playing at Vicarage Road for the first time in 2010."
