On hold: Watford had looked certain to land Gestede last month

Watford have put plans to sign Blackburn striker Rudy Gestede on hold while they wait to see if new manager Quique Sanchez Flores wants the player at Vicarage Road.

A move for Gestede looked a certainty after they won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs under previous boss Slavisa Jokanovic.

The club were optimistic about agreeing a £6million deal for the 26-year-old, who has scored 34 goals in just 65 appearances for Rovers since joining from Cardiff in January 2014.

Jokanovic wanted the forward to strengthen the frontline but his departure over wage demands last month put a stop to the deal.

Former Sevilla boss Flores was only appointed as his replacement a few weeks ago and is keen to have a look at the squad first before deciding what targets he wants.

Watford’s players aren’t due to return to pre-season training until the start of next month.
