Watford are unlikely to renew their interest in Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot after having a bid worth £500,000 rejected in January.

The Hornets have been impressed by the 18-year-old, who has made 15 appearances for the League Two club this term and has been followed by Arsenal and Tottenham.

Yet as things stand, Watford are looking elsewhere in their hunt for defensive reinforcements.

A Vicarage Road source told Standard Sport: "The club had a January bid rejected and now we have moved on to other targets."

Despite Saturday’s home defeat by Burnley, Watford are edging towards safety and a fourth consecutive campaign in the Premier League.

They are nine points clear of 18th-placed Southampton, who nonetheless have a game in hand. They can take a huge step towards confirming their status at relegation-threatened Huddersfield on Saturday.

Javi Gracia’s team are without a win in their last four matches but will be confident of collecting enough points from games against Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Huddersfield to secure their top-flight status.
