Fulham have been relegated from the Premier League following their defeat to Watford on Tuesday night.

The Whites knew they needed to claim at least a point at Vicarage Road to earn a brief stay of execution, but suffered a ninth successive loss after losing 4-1 at Vicarage Road.

It is now impossible for Scott Parker's 19th-place side to move clear of danger given that they still sit 16 points adrift of safety with only five matches left to play this season.

It has been a disastrous campaign for Fulham, who only returned to the top-flight in 2018 following a four-year absence after beating Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final.

Despite spending in excess of £100million on new players during the summer transfer window, they claimed just five points from their opening 12 matches - a run that led to the departure of promotion-winning manager Slavisa Jokanovic in November.

Claudio Ranieri was immediately installed as successor, but left his role after less than four months in March against a backdrop of supporter unrest after overseeing just three wins in 17 matches.

Fulham then named former captain and first-team coach Parker as caretaker boss, but the 38-year-old has been unable to stem the tide with Tuesday's loss to Watford their fifth in a row under his leadership.

Chief to such a swift downfall has been their wretched defensive record, which, with a mammoth 76 goals conceded in just 33 matches, stands as comfortably the worst in the top-flight.

Fulham are the second team to be relegated from the top division this term.

Huddersfield will also return to the second tier in 2019-20 after equalling the record for the earliest confirmed Premier League demotion with a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
