Troy Deeney England Euro 2016 call-up would make Watford striker 'proudest man in the country'

Watford striker Troy Deeney has not given up on an England call-up ahead of Euro 2016.

Deeney scored twice as Watford beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday, and his manager Quique Sanchez Flores believes the 27-year-old should be in Roy Hodgson’s plans for the European Championship in France this summer.

The London Team of the Week star has eight Premier League goals this season, with Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane and Jermain Defoe the only English players to have scored more.

Hodgson did not mention Deeney during his appearance on Match Of The Day at the weekend, but the Watford captain is determined to continue his impressive form.

“If I can play for England I will be the proudest man in the country,” he said. “But my aim is to be playing at a high level week in and week out for Watford. If Mr Hodgson decides to put me in the England team, then I will be happy.

“I do not want to be put in because I scored a burst of goals just before the Euros; I want it to be over the course of the season.

“I think that is nine goals and six assists [in all competitions] now, so I’m not doing too bad. But my life is not going to be ruined by not playing international football.”

Watford are ninth in the table, well clear of the relegation zone and four points off the top six.

“We have got to be happy with 36 points so far,” added Deeney. “We are probably two wins away from being safe, and that has got to be the target.”

Next up for Watford is a home FA Cup tie against Leeds on Saturday.
