Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has denied handing in a transfer request under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
The England captain had previously questioned United's ability to attract top players in October 2010 - before agreeing a new deal - and Ferguson claimed that the forward wanted out for a second time three years later.
Although the 29-year-old admitted in an upcoming documentary titled 'Wayne Rooney - The Man Behind the Goals' that he fell out with the Scotsman during his last year in charge at Old Trafford, he is adamant that he did not formally ask to leave.
Rooney went to discuss his role in the team with Ferguson after being dropped, but was surprised to see reports of a transfer request surface soon after.
"I went in to see him and just said if you're not going to play me it might be better if I moved on - then all of a sudden it's all over the press I put in a transfer request, which I never did.
"I don't know what happened or why that came out that way," he told the BBC.
Rooney missed Ferguson's final game in charge at Old Trafford but, after two summer bids from Chelsea were rejected, eventually signed a new five-and-a-half-year deal at United in February 2014.

Despite Rooney's fall out with his former boss, the striker also explained in the film that Ferguson's presence was the key reason behind his decision to sign for United as a teenager.
“He was the reason why I wanted to join Man United, to work with him, in my eyes the best manager of all-time.
"For him to be interested in me and wanting me to play under him, there was nowhere else I was going to go.”
