Wayne Rooney says Manchester United lost despite playing the better football and having the better chances during their 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Manchester United failed to manage a single shot on target in their disappointing defeat to Southampton, despite having 60 per cent of the possession, ten shots to Southampton's nine and having an injury free squad - barring Ashley Young.

"That is football, that is how it goes," Rooney told Sky Sports.

"I think overall we had the better chances and played the better football and deserved to win but we were punished. I have seen Southampton play better, we stopped a lot of their threats but we got punished. We have to move on and focus on the next game."

Player Ratings: Manchester United v Southampton

1/9

Wayne Rooney resumed his role in central midfield for the game but was not as influential as he has been in the past, thanks partly to the sterling work of Southampton's midfielders Victor Wanyama and Morgan Schneiderlin who stifled Rooney, Mata and Carrick all game.

United will be thankful for a relatively soft run of fixtures in the coming weeks as they visit the two bottom teams in the Premier League in QPR and Leicester as well as a trip to Cambridge in the FA cup fourth round.
