Wayne Rooney to miss United's big Liverpool clash

4 January 2013

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been ruled out for another two weeks.

Rooney sustained a minor knee injury in training on Christmas Day and Sir Alex Ferguson initially expected the striker to be back in a fortnight.

However, it now seems he will be missing for longer and will sit out next weekend’s clash with Liverpool. “Wayne’s still injured and it looks like going to be out another two weeks or so,” Ferguson said today.

“It’s a surprise as he was meant to be back training now. So he’ll be out for longer than we thought and I don’t think he will be fit for the Liverpool match. The injury is nothing serious. He just got clipped behind his knee and he’s still feeling it. Hopefully in two weeks it’ll be sorted but it’s a loss.”

United are expected to include Phil Jones in the team for tomorrow’s FA Cup third-round tie at West Ham. But Darren Fletcher is unlikely to be involved since the heavy pitch at Upton Park is unlikely to suit the midfielder, who has battled back from a chronic bowel condition this season.
