Weekend sport is hit by the big freeze

Under the weather: Heavy snow meant Arsenal had to call of the game against Bolton

The atrocious weather has wreaked havoc with the weekend's sporting fixtures with football, rugby and racing all falling victim to the big freeze.

Already 18 of the 36 Football League matches have been called off along with two-thirds of the games in the Guinness Premiership while there will be no jump racing until Tuesday at the earliest.

All six League One and Two games involving London clubs have been postponed along with the Championship clash between Watford and Sheffield United at Vicarage Road. Watford said that with snow and ice having built up since Tuesday night there were fears over spectators getting to the ground.

The club's head of operations Glyn Evans said: "We are mindful of the advice currently being given by the authorities that people should only travel when absolutely necessary.

"We'd made great efforts to make sure the pitch was in good condition for the game but with freezing temperatures forecast for this area overnight and Friday, and specifically a forecast of minus six degrees tonight, given all of those circumstances this was a clear-cut decision to have to make concerning the safety of our supporters."

Barring any more postponements, the only Championship action in London this weekend will be Queens Park Rangers' game against Plymouth and Bristol City's visit to Crystal Palace.

Arsenal today insisted they were right to postpone last night's game with Bolton just fours hours before kick-off.

A spokesman said: "As temperatures fell, fans would have faced a hazardous journey home, while the majority of trains from mainline stations in London would have departed before the final whistle."

The Guinness Premiership is facing the possibility of a wipe-out, which is a blow for England team manager Martin Johnson, who had hoped to run the rule over players before next week announcing his squad for the
Six Nations.

Harlequins' match at home to Leeds was postponed today meaning the only games still on are London Wasps' trip to Leicester and Worcester's game at home to London Irish.

There will be no National Hunt racing in Britain until next week. There has been no action on turf since Plumpton's meeting on Sunday while the all-weather cards at Lingfield and Kempton were scrapped today because of a lack of ambulance cover.
