West Ham close door on loan-move return for Joe Cole

West Ham are unlikely to offer their former player Joe Cole a Premier League lifeline before the transfer window closes on Friday.

There has been speculation that Liverpool will off-load Cole and that West Ham are prepared to take the 30-year-old midfielder on loan for the rest of the season.

But West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has said that last week’s £10.75million club record signing of Matt Jarvis from Wolves was likely to be his last for the time being and that was supported by a club source today who said: “We have no more business planned. There will be no one coming in unless someone goes out which is unlikely but possible.”

Allardyce will make wholesale changes for tonight’s Capital One Cup tie at home to Crewe.

Neither goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen nor James Collins, whose errors led to goals in the 3-0 defeat at Swansea, is likely to figure while new signings Modibo Maiga and Alou Diarra should both start, along with defender Joey O’Brien and striker Nicky Maynard.

“The match will tell me whether they are staking a claim to get in the first team to play against Fulham on Saturday,” said Allardyce.
