David Moyes’ decision to name a strong side against Leeds United in the third-round of the FA Cup was vindicated as West Ham United passed through into the next round.

In a game of few chances, Manuel Lazini’s scrappy goal was enough to put the hone side ahead at the break, whose starting XI resembled pretty much the first-choice Premier League group.

The Argentine, in excellent form of late, stabbed home after good work from both Michail Antonio and Nikola Vlasic.

As much as that says about the squad depth (or lack thereof) at the club, it equally speaks to how seriously Moyes is taking the competition.

The upward trajectory the club have embarked during Moyes’ second stint is built on momentum.

That lends itself to cup competitions in particular, so it will have been promising for Moyes to see how well West Ham can manage a game against Premier League opposition even when not playing at their highest level.

When Jarrod Bowen slotted in to seal safe passage into the next round, Moyes’ bold statement in terms of team selection was entirely vindicated.
