Fiorentina have signed Edimilson Fernandes on a season-long loan from West Ham.

The 22-year-old, left out of the squad for the Hammers’ opening day 4-0 defeat at Liverpool, had struggled with ankle injuries last season and made just nine starts in the Premier League, providing his solitary assist in a win over Everton.

Fiorentina, who finished eighth in Serie A last season under the stewardship of Stefano Pioli, say they have a right to buy Fernandes should he impress in Florence next season and have paid an initial loan fee of just under £1million.

Fernandes will be tasked with filling the void left by Croatian midfielder Milan Badelj, who left the Viola on a free transfer to Lazio earlier this summer.

Fernandes’ arrival in Tuscany sees him move in the opposite direction to Carlos Sanchez, who joined the Hammers on transfer deadline day, signing a two-year deal in East London.
