Dimitri Payet believes West Ham's last-gasp victory over Accrington Stanley in the EFL Cup in midweek will prove important for the Hammers' confidence as the club look to get back on track in the Premier League.

West Ham came into their third-round clash with Accrington at the London Stadium on Wednesday having won just one league game in five matches, with the Hammers looking to be heading for extra time in the EFL Cup as the score remained goalless with 95 minutes on the clock.

But Payet won a free kick, which he then converted in the 96th minute, to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory and send West Ham into the next round of the Cup, where the Hammers will face London rivals Chelsea.

Payet was happy to see his side win the tie with Accrington, and believes the victory will be "great" for the team's spirit as the Premier League gets back underway this weekend.

"I am working hard on all aspects of my game," Payet told whufc.com. "On Saturday, I hit the post with the free-kick and yesterday, it went in.

"The goal helped us a lot and makes us feel a lot better because it meant we avoided extra-time and another 30 minutes of football.

"It will be great for our confidence."

West Ham now host Southampton at the London Stadium on Sunday, with Claude Puel's side likely to arrive in east London full of confidence following three successive victories in all competitions.

But Payet insists West Ham can end that winning streak by using their newfound confidence from the Cup and taking it into the league this weekend.

"Sunday’s game against Southampton is, of course, one that we can win and we will be doing all that we can to do so and to take the victory at home," he said.

"We know that we are in need of points, but we are at home and I think that the last-minute victory against Accrington will have helped us mentally and will have boosted our confidence and I hope that we will see that on the pitch on Sunday."
