West Ham's London Stadium is a 'powder keg' for fan trouble, says former Hammers defender Tony Gale

The London Stadium is a "powder keg" for fan trouble, according to former West Ham defender Tony Gale.

The Hammers' EFL Cup victory over Chelsea on Wednesday night was marred by clashes between rival supporters.

Slaven Bilic's side edged past their rivals courtesy of a 2-1 scoreline but events in the stands overshadowed matters on the pitch.

Coins and seats were thrown during the closing stages of the game while further reports claimed riot police were deployed inside the ground to dispel the disturbances.

Both clubs have condemned the violence and Gale, who played for the Hammers for a decade, is concerned that the London Stadium is not suited to staging football.

"The club have got real problems with the stadium," he told Talksport.

"They’ve inherited a lovely stadium, it really is beautiful, but it’s not a football ground.

“It wasn’t built with segregation in mind. There are so many entrances that it’s like a powder keg.

"I feel for West Ham because you’d have to have thousands of police to stop any trouble happening, but they’ve got to try and do something about it.

“They’ve just got to pay to get more police in, because people want to go to a game of football and be safe so they can watch it and the kids can watch it as well.

“It’s a nightmare for the club. Last night was a big test for the club and unfortunately they failed.”
