Manuel Pellegrini has challenged Samir Nasri to prove his fitness over the coming weeks after his former player at Manchester City eyes a deal with West Ham.

The former French international continues to train in east London in recent weeks with Pellegrini hopeful of securing a move in the New Year.

The midfielder is currently serving an 18-month ban for a violation of the World Anti-Doping Code and Uefa’s doping regulations after intravenously receiving 500 millilitres of sterile water containing nutrients while on holiday in Los Angeles in December 2016.

The ban comes to an end in January but Nasri was allowed to return to training in November and, after failing his initial medical, Pellegrini is hoping the 31-year-old still has something to offer in the Premier League.

“Well, we'll see. Samir Nasri is working here with us,” Pellegrini said. “It's a long time that he had his ban but we are giving him a hand to return to football.

“I hope that from now until the end of the year he will be fit, and if that is the case we will try to keep him here at West Ham.”

Nasri’s compatriot and former Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra continues to train at Rush Green, though there is no indication he will be offered another deal at the club.
