It's coming home: Cricket fans chant at Lord's as England World Cup fever spreads

Tom Dutton6 July 2018

How can you tell World Cup fever has really taken hold? When 'Football's Coming Home' is blasted out of the public address system at Lord's. Yes, Lord's.

That was the scene on Thursday night as Surrey faced Middlesex at the Home of Cricket in the first round of fixtures in this season's T20 Blast.

With England's football team preparing for a World Cup quarter-final against Sweden in Samara on Saturday, there is a sense that the Three Lions could create history in the coming days.

Just 90 minutes stand between Gareth Southgate's team and a first World Cup semi-final for 28 years. With Croatia or Russia the opponents should England progress to the last four, fans could be forgiven for setting their sights on the final in Moscow on July 15.

And cricket supporters have joined the party. As Middlesex chased down Surrey's 158 with an over to spare, fans inside Lord's belted out the 1996 original 'Football's Coming Home' from David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and the Lightning Seeds.

That's just not cricket.
