Makoto Hasebe: Japan will beat Cameroon

10 April 2012

Makoto Hasebe backed Japan to claim a first ever World Cup win on foreign soil in their Group E opener against Cameroon on Monday despite their goalscoring woes in the build-up to the tournament.

Takeshi Okada's side rounded off their preparations with a disappointing goalless draw with Zimbabwe yesterday as they once again failed to find the back of the net.

The result did end a run of four successive defeats for Japan but highlighted their lack of firepower as they have now managed just one goal in their last five games.

Skipper Hasebe came through the match with Zimbabwe unscathed after suffering a back injury in last Friday's 2-0 defeat to the Ivory Coast and the Wolfsburg midfielder maintains Japan have every chance of victory against Cameroon.

"Our problem scoring goals is an issue that has needed addressing for quite some time and it is something we are acutely aware of," he said on Kyodo News.

"But we went close on several occasions (against Zimbabwe) and there were positives to be taken. I think we have a real chance of beating Cameroon as they are not at their best. It won't be easy of course but the main thing is that we are all in top condition."
