Sunday Mirror journalist arrested over England fan 'trespass'

In court: Wright and Joseph

A British journalist appeared in court early today over his reporting of the England team dressing room intruder.

Simon Wright, 44, was arrested at Cape Town airport last night by South African police after he stepped off a flight from Bloemfontein.

Wright interviewed Pavlos Joseph, of Crystal Palace, who was arrested days after he wandered into the English team's locker room at Cape Town Stadium to protest against the team's draw with Algeria.

Wright, who is married and a father-of-two, will appear in court again tomorrow. Mr Joseph will also appear before the judge tomorrow.

The journalist is accused of attempting to "defeat the ends of justice by concealing the whereabouts of Mr Joseph when he knew the police were looking for him".

South African police National Commissioner General Bheki Cele's allegation that the intruder had been helped and "orchestrated" by Wright was fiercely denied by the reporter and his newspaper, the Sunday Mirror.

Wright is also accused of an immigration offence for giving false details to the hotel where he and Mr Joseph stayed, which he also denies.
