'We don't want to wait 20 years': Harry Kane says England must improve following World Cup progress in Russia

England captain Harry Kane says the squad must use their World Cup campaign to improve following defeat in the third place play-off game.

The Three Lions surpassed all expectations in reaching the semi-finals at this World Cup, but their lack of creativity from open play showed the side’s limitations in the end.

For this squad, and The FA, the target has always been success in 2022, and Kane knows there is still improvement needed.

Triumphs and tears: England fans' 2018 World Cup journey

Speaking after the 2-0 loss to Belgium, he told ITV: "This game showed there is still room for improvement. We're not the finished article, we're still improving and will only get better.

“We don't want to wait another 20 years to get into the semi-finals and the big matches. We need to improve, we need to get better but that will come.

"We have made huge strides. Now it is about resting up and getting ready for the next season."

Kane is still on course to take home the Golden Boot from Russia this summer, with his closest challenger Romelu Lukaku having finished on four to the Tottenham striker’s six.

He added: "It [being top scorer] shows we had a good group stage, scored a lot of goals. Obviously I'm disappointed I couldn't get a goal in the last few games.

"Sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it doesn't. But if I win it, it'll be something I'll be very proud of."
