Welcome to the hotel vuvuzela, the ‘quiet’ new base for England’s squad

1/2

Fabio Capello and his team will not escape the torment of the dreaded vuvuzelas when they check into their Cape Town hotel today.

After the tranquillity and seclusion of the Royal Bafokeng campus in Rustenburg, the England squad will sleep in The Vineyard — which actually promotes the use of the plastic trumpet that has become a symbol of the World Cup.

Today the metre-long instruments were being blasted at full volume inside the South African hotel's Splash restaurant and staff said they had received no orders to confiscate them. Indeed, the top prize in a "guess the correct score" competition for the South Africa and Uruguay match in the bar last night was ... a vuvuzela.

It will raise fears of a sleepless night for the squad before their must-win match against Algeria tomorrow and resurrect memories of four years ago when German fans, celebrating victory against Poland, kept England players awake until the early hours before a crucial match as they partied outside their Nuremberg hotel.

England and Algerian fans are also staying at the hotel.

If the vuvuzelas prove too distracting, the players can at least seek sanctuary in a row of 11 "pampering" suites available to the squad and goalkeeper Robert Green will be interested to find a treatment called "Paraffin Hands" on offer to those who cannot get a grip.

Players will also be able to use a gym and outdoor swimming pool.

The team have the best suites on the third floor with each room enjoying views of Table Mountain and the FA have installed security guards to ensure privacy for the players.

One staff member said: "There can be a lot of noise but hopefully the players will not be disturbed."
