George Russell has predicted a much more open race for the F1 constructers’ championship ahead of the 2022 season.
The newly-signed Mercedes driver joins the team who won their eighth consecutive title last season although Russell predicts some of the key rule changes could let others into the fold.
The world, of course, awaits to see how Lewis Hamilton reacts to his controversial loss to Max Verstappen in Abu Dhabi, though Russell hinted we could see far more excitement off of the track too.
“A team like Ferrari that have been through a difficult period for the last two years are going to be so hungry, especially with this new rule change, to come back fighting, similar to McLaren as well,” he said to F1’s official website.
“These teams have got the infrastructure, the talent within the engineering department, with the drivers as well, to really fight,” said Russell at the end of 2021.
“I truly believe there are five teams all capable of really doing something special next year, so you’ve got to be absolutely on it, and I think development is going to be absolutely key [in 2022].”
