Mick Schumacher, son of Formula One icon Michael, will drive for Haas in 2021, the team announced on Wednesday.

The American outfit confirmed that Formula 2 Championship leader Schumacher, 21, has signed a multi-year deal.

It means Haas will have an entirely rookie lineup, with Russian Nikita Mazepin having also agreed terms for next season on Tuesday.

Haas had seemed the most likely fit for Schumacher after the team announced it would not renew the contracts of current duo Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean, who was leaving hospital on Wednesday following his fireball crash at the weekend, at the end of this season.

Schumacher - who is a member of Ferrari’s young driver academy - will will make his debut 30 years after his seven-time world champion father first entered the sport.

He was due to make his F1 debut by driving in practice for Alfa Romeo at the Eifel Grand Prix in October, only for that session to be scrapped due to poor weather conditions at the Nurburgring.

“The prospect of being on the Formula 1 grid next year makes me incredibly happy and I’m simply speechless,” said Schumacher, who will drive for Haas in the first practice session at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 11.

“I would like to thank Haas F1 Team, Scuderia Ferrari and the Ferrari Driver Academy for placing their trust in me. I also want to acknowledge and extend my love to my parents – I know that I owe them everything. I have always believed that I would realize my dream of Formula 1.

"A huge thank you must also go to all the great motorsport fans out there who have supported me throughout my career. I will give it my all, as I always do, and I look forward to going on this journey together with Haas F1 and them.”
