Ready for battle: Frankel showed his class on the gallops today

Brilliant miler Frankel impressed trainer Sir Henry Cecil this morning in his final piece of serious work before his showdown with Canford Cliffs at Glorious Goodwood next week.

The unbeaten 2,000 Guineas winner, who will be taking on older horses for the first time in the Sussex Stakes - a race billed the 'duel of the downs' - stretched 10 lengths clear of Bullet Train after working over a mile on the Limekilns gallop at Newmarket.

Cecil told the Racing Post: "I'm pleased with that, he will have another easy piece of work on Friday or Saturday and that will do him."

Jockey Tom Queally, who has ridden Frankel in all of his seven victories, the last coming in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, was equally delighted with the workout.

He said: "Frankel gave me a good feel. He settled beautifully and is growing up all the time."

The three-year-old faces his stiffest task next Wednesday when he takes on Richard Hannon's Canford Cliffs, who was brilliant when beating French super mare Goldikova in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
