Freestyle fillip for Foster

13 April 2012

Mark Foster can race in the 50 metres freestyle in the World Championships in Japan next month after a climbdown by British swimming's performance director.

Foster, ranked second in the world in the event, was originally left out of freestyle when the British team was selected.

But performance director Bill Sweetenham has agreed that as Foster is already selected for the 50 metres butterfly he can also race in the freestyle as well.

"Of those already on the team, anyone can swim a second event providing that, in that event, they are ranked in the world's top 16," Sweetenham told The Independent.

"I am delighted they have found a way to put the best swimmers in their best events," said Foster.
