French colt US Ranger has Teofilo in his sights

14 April 2012

US Ranger has been supplemented for Saturday's 2,000 Guineas and will bid to be the first French colt since the glory days of Pennekamp (1995) and Zafonic (1993) to win the Newmarket Classic.

American breeder Joe Allen and joint owner Michael Tabor paid £25,000 to supplement the colt to the race.

He remains unbeaten after four runs, including an impressive win in the Prix Djebel at Maisons-Laffitte three weeks ago.

US Ranger is trained in the shadows of the Pyrenees by Jean- Claude Rouget, who has had only one previous runner in Britain — Pinson, 10th of 15 in the 2005 Champion Stakes.

Allen will be at Newmarket to cheer on US Ranger but Tabor is attending the Kentucky Derby, where he runs Scat Daddy and Circular Quay.

Andy Smith, Allen's racing manager, said: "I saw US Ranger win in the French Provinces last year and, if Teofilo is not 100 per cent, he'll take all the beating.

"He has a high cruising speed and gets the mile well. He looked good winning the Djebel over a straight seven furlongs."

US Ranger, the mount of Christophe Lemaire, has been backed down to 5-1 third favourite but was 50-1 a few weeks ago.

Thirty possibles are still entered in the Classic. The absence of Holy Roman Emperor, whisked off to stud to replace fertility-challenged stablemate George Washington, and the training hiccup to unbeaten favourite Teofilo have clearly encouraged trainers to take their chance.

Haatef, a 10-1 shot trained by Kevin Prendergast and ridden by Declan McDonogh, was only three lengths fourth behind Teofilo in the Dewhurst Stakes and carries a lot of confidence.

Prendergast said: "He'd had only the one run (a maiden win at The Curragh) before he went to the Dewhurst and he doesn't have that much ground to make up.

"He has grown up and is a bull of a horse now and I'll be disappointed if he is not right there."

Aidan O'Brien, having lost Holy Roman Emperor, still has the choice of running Duke Of Marmalade, Eagle Mountain, Mount Nelson and Yellowstone to try to win the race for a third year in a row.

William Jarvis intends to let 50-1 outsider Tobosa, a short head second to Prime Defender in the European Free Handicap 13 days ago, take his chance. Philip Robinson rides.

Finsceal Beo, favourite for the 1,000 Guineas, faces a possible maximum of 24 rivals in the fillies' Classic on Sunday.

BIG-RACE BETTING: 5-2 Teofilo, 3 Adagio, 5 US Ranger, 6 Major Cadeaux, 10 Diamond Tycoon, 10 Haatef, 12 Strategic Prince, 14 Dutch Art, 25 Cockney Rebel, 25 Duke Of Marmalade, 33 Mount Nelson, 33 Truly Royal.
