Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton will start on pole for the Formula One German Grand Prix after a disastrous qualifying session for Ferrari at Hockenheim.

The 34-year-old starts on the front row alongside Max Verstappen, with team-mate Valtteri Bottas in third and Pierre Gasly in fourth.

Both Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel suffered technical faults to cap a miserable qualifying session for the Scuderia.

Leclerc had topped Q1 with a superb lap but Lewis Hamilton got the edge over the Monegasque by two tenths of a second in Q2.

Heading into the top 10 shootout, there wasn't much between the two drivers but the fans were robbed of a close battle to the line with Leclerc also facing technical problems.

Ferrari's Vettel could not have had a worse return to his home track, failing to set a time in Q1, with the Italian team revealing a turbo failure prevented the four-time Formula One world champion from putting in a hot lap.

The 32-year-old, who started last year's race on pole position but crashed out while leading, has not won a race since the Belgian Grand Prix last August.

The German reported a loss of power on the radio shortly after he left the pits for his first run during the opening phase of qualifying.

He will start from the back of the grid in Sunday's race.
