Germany honour former captain

13 April 2012

Germany will wear black armbands in Friday's World Cup quarter-final against the United States following the death of former captain Fritz Walter, aged 81.

FIFA's Keith Cooper said: "He was a great player, a great man - one of the heroes of German football."

Walter led Germany to their first World Cup win in 1954 and was one of three honorary captains along with Uwe Seeler and Franz Beckenbauer.

Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, president of the German Football Association, said: "He was a symbol not only for football but for the German nation as a whole."

Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn said: "There is a parallel between the 1954 team and the current one. Nobody then had expected Germany to become world champions - perhaps we will do the same."
