Giants ease through

12 April 2012

In-form Huddersfield cruised into the fifth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a 42-16 hammering of Harlequins - their second in a fortnight - to extend their impressive away record to nine wins in a row.

The Londoners were hoping to use their 46-6 Super League mauling at the Galpharm Stadium as extra motivation but instead were handed another lesson in smother defence and clinical finishing.

Huddersfield were beaten finalists in 2006 and, on this form, will fancy their chances of going one better this year.

It was fairly predictable from the moment the scheming Kevin Brown got prop Keith Mason over for the first of eight tries after six minutes and skipper Brett Hodgson kicked the first of four goals.

Harlequins were briefly level, courtesy of a 20th-minute try from rampaging second rower Tony Clubb, but they struggled to unlock an impressive Giants defence and their danger was restricted to the tactical kicking of half-backs Danny Orr and Luke Dorn.

In Saturday's other Cup clash, Warrington eased their way into the fifth round with a 56-10 blitz of Championship One part-timers York.

The Knights, who finished with 12 men, briefly stunned their engage Super League opponents by taking a 6-4 lead when full-back Danny Ratcliffe finished off John Oakes' burst in style with Richard Knight tagging on the conversion.

It was a third win in a row for the Wolves but coach Tony Smith will be alarmed by a sloppy defence which also allowed Paul Hughes to scramble over after Mike Mitchell was held short midway through the first half.

York had prop Danny Ekis sent off after 64 minutes when they trailed 34-10 and Louis Anderson was yellow-carded for retaliation.

And in the end a try each for Simon Grix, Vinnie Anderson (2), Ben Harrison, Ben Westwood, Michael Cooper, Chris Bridge, Lee Briers, Louis Anderson and Paul Johnson were more than enough for the Super League side.
