Giants on top of the world

Win: the Giants celebrate
13 April 2012

The Giants are finally celebrating victory in baseball's World Series more than half a century after moving across the United States to San Franciso.

Edgar Renteria broke the deadlock in Game Five with a three-run homer in the seventh inning and San Francisco went on to beat the Texas Rangers 3-1 and take the best-of-seven series 4-1.

It was an overdue victory. The great Willie Mays led the Giants to their previous crown in 1954, four years before they left the Polo Grounds in New York.

"This buried a lot of bones," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. "This group deserved it, faithful from the beginning. We're proud and humbled by the achievement."

The Giants scored 29 runs, with Renteria named series MVP.
