Glazer increases Man Utd stake

14 April 2012

American football tycoon Malcolm Glazer has increased his stake in Manchester United, prompting increased speculation of an imminent takeover.

Glazer, who owns Super Bowl champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has steadily increased his stake in the Barclaycard Premiership champions in recent months while Irish racing duo John Magnier and JP McManus have also upped their involvement.

Glazer now owns over 37million shares in Manchester United plc, which gives him a 14.31% stake.

United's shares have risen by 150% in the last year as the takeover talk has increased.

On Friday they hit a three-year high when news of a major acquisition of shares by the German Commerzbank was revealed.

The London head of Commerzbank, Mehmet Dalman, was revealed as the man behind the move but today it has emerged that those shares have now been passed on to Glazer.

McManus and racing tycoon John Magnier increased their holding in the club from 6.77% to 10.37% in September.

They then raised their stake to more than 23% after buying out shareholder BSkyB in October.
