Glover turns focus to long term

New Wakefield owner Andrew Glover is aiming to secure the club's long-term tenure in Super League after safeguarding their immediate future.

The club will pay a penalty for breaching the governing body's insolvency regulations with a points deduction to be determined by the Rugby Football League's board of directors and, more importantly, will discover in late July if they are to be given a new three-year Super League licence.

"Our next target is to make sure that we can secure a Super League licence," he said. "I think we've a much better chance than we had last week."

He added: "We are going to be trying our damnedest to get one. We're not resigned to the fact that we're going into the Championship.

"We have already held discussions with the Rugby Football League and we're confident that we can put forward a compelling proposal."

The man entrusted with putting together Wakefield's business plan is chief executive James Elston, who was re-appointed along with the bulk of the admininstrative staff who were laid off 24 hours earlier and will be the only other director of the new company.

"People are focusing a lot on the facilities criteria but there is a much wider bearing on what else you do within your club and this club does a lot of things well," said Elston, pointing to Wakefield's record of youth development, a vibrant community trust and healthy commercial operation.

"The finance aspect has now been resolved and, while the stadium is still an issue, we fully expect that, by the time we put our application in, we will have answered the questions required.

"For that reason we do feel we'll be as strong as anybody else in the league."
