Golden shots firing top two

Leo Spall13 April 2012

The Den will be the venue for an unofficial strikers' convention tomorrow when Division Two leaders Millwall play second-placed Rotherham.

Delegates include Millwall manager Mark McGhee, a prolific scorer as a player for Aberdeen, Celtic and Newcastle during the Eighties.

His Rotherham counterpart Ronnie Moore, who also had a decent record in the same era as a striker with Tranmere, Rotherham and Charlton, will be there too.

Then there are their players and it should be no surprise that McGhee and Moore have the two leading marksmen in the division.

Millwall's Neil Harris, who will being watching from the stands tomorrow because he is suspended, is the division's leading goalscorer with 24 league goals.

The 23-year-old is two ahead of Rotherham's Mark Robins, the 31-year-old former Manchester United forward who has scored 87 goals in 223 games in this country. They are two of the main reasons for Millwall and Rotherham being the division's joint top scorers with each team boasting 72 goals.

But there are plenty of other players who could feature tomorrow who have made careers of scoring, notably Steve Claridge, 34, and Tony Cottee, 35.

They are at Millwall until the end of the season and have a combined total of 474 goals in 1,160 games for clubs in England.

The Lions can also call upon 33-year-old forward Paul Moody and Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Richard Sadlier.

Millwall manager McGhee said: "With this sort of ability on the pitch or substitutes' bench there should be some goals. Both teams have scored a lot this season and Rotherham play with three up front and pump the ball forward from the back and from set-pieces.

"But we are confident about our defence because we have got a very good record this season and we do not expect to lose goals.

"We were convinced that we had turned the corner after some poor performances in March, even before we beat Stoke 2-0 on Tuesday evening.

"We have been feeling good for a couple of games, but needed the win to convince people that we are hitting form.

"The boys are buzzing now and even though our automatic promotion hopes do not necessarily hinge on the game, if we win it would be a big step towards it.

"This is our biggest game of the season and I will be disappointed if there is a single seat empty in the Millwall areas."

McGhee has no new injury worries and boasts a full-strength squad with the exception of marksman Harris and defender Joe Dolan, who is still recovering from a broken leg.
