Gonzales stuns Federer

12 April 2012

World number one Roger Federer was beaten by Chile's Fernando Gonzalez at the Tennis Masters Cup on Monday.

The Swiss started well before losing his way, eventually going down to a shock 3-6 7-6 (7/1) 7-5 loss.

Federer looked on course to maintain his perfect record against Gonzalez as he breezed through the first set. But the South American won the second set tie-break before breaking in the 11th game of the third to go on and secure victory.

It was the first time Federer has been defeated in round-robin play at the season-ending tournament in Shanghai.

"It's a tough loss because I thought I played pretty well," Federer said on the tournament's official website.

"To start off the round robin matches with a loss is something I haven't always had to deal with, because usually you lose and you leave. But it is okay. Maybe it's the only loss you can have during a season and come back and win a tournament. I hope I can play well in the next two matches.

"In some ways I have regrets, and in some ways I don't because I just thought it was ridiculous what kind of shots he came up with. But you've got to give him credit for that."

Andy Roddick got his campaign off to a good start with a 6-3 4-6 6-2 victory over Nikolay Davydenko.

After comfortably winning the first set, the 2003 US Open champion dropped the second when he let slip a 4-3 lead.

But Roddick, who was playing just his second match in nearly two months, broke Davydenko in the third set for 2-1 lead before closing out the match after claiming a second break.
