Goosen gets ready for 'normal' day

13 April 2012

Retief Goosen was looking forward to "a more normal day" as he continued his bid to win the Scottish Open title.

The 32-year-old took a two-stroke lead over young Australian Adam Scott into the third round of the £2.2million event.

An 11-under-par halfway total of 131 was not all Goosen hoped it would be.

He quickly added three more birdies to his opening 62, but played his last 11 holes in one-over.

Goosen said: "The greens were full of spike marks and heel marks, which made putting really difficult.

"I suppose it's only to be expected with 156 players going through and the amount of rain we've had."

Now it is down to only 71 - thanks to Goosen's playing partner Nick Faldo, whose closing birdie left him 12 behind at one-over-par, but knocked Ian Woosnam and Lee Westwood out of the tournament.

Going into the Open at Lytham next Thursday Westwood has now missed the cut on three of his last four starts.

Woosnam, meanwhile, had to decide whether to drive to Lancashire for the 36-hole Open final qualifying tomorrow or rely on the failures of others to get him into a championship he has not missed since 1981.

The Welshman, runner-up in the European Open last Sunday, lies second in a mini-Order of Merit which has been running since May and which offers seven spots in the Open.

Woosnam ought to be safe, but it is still technically possible for six players to pass him.

Berkshire's Barry Lane, who shares third place with Paul McGinley and Thomas Bjorn, is another seeking an Open spot - eight more are on offer from the tournament itself - while McGinley can take a mighty leap towards a Ryder Cup debut.

John Daly's presence at six-under, alongside Clarke, Tom Lehman and Australian left-hander Greg Chalmers, adds spice to the weekend and Colin Montgomerie and Sergio Garcia are not out of the hunt yet at five under and four under respectively.
