Goosen victorious

13 April 2012

Retief Goosen cruised to a three-stroke victory in the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.

Five strokes clear with two holes to play, Goosen allowed himself the luxury of two closing bogeys just as he did in his play-off with Mark Brooks at the US Open.

He finished with a level par 71 for a 16 under par total of 268.

Dane Thomas Bjorn finished second for the second week running and Dubliner Paul McGinley shared third spot with Berkshire's Barry Lane, Australian Adam Scott and American John Daly.

For Daly it was his best finish since winning the Open at St Andrews in 1995.

McGinley had to be the most disappointed at the finish.

He was heading for joint second until he muffed a shot from just short of the green at the last and bogeyed.

It cost him over £86,000 - and the equivalent number of Ryder Cup points.

It was Lane's first top three finish for six years and his performance gave him one of 15 spots on offer for this week's Open championship.
