Gritty Earl digs deep

British lightweight champion Graham Earl climbed off the floor to add the Commonwealth belt to his collection.

The victory also enabled 26-year-old Earl, from Luton, to secure the Lonsdale Belt outright. He completed a sensational turnaround at Bethnal Green's York Hall when two uppercuts hurt title-holder Kevin Bennett, forcing the fight to be stopped in round nine.

Earl, who was knocked down in round six, said: "This was a fight I couldn't lose. I showed what a great heart I've got and now I want bigger things."
