Hamann left out of Germany squad

14 April 2012

New Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann has left Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann out of the squad to face Austria in his first match in charge on August 18.

Hamann, 31, was arguably Germany's best player in Euro 2004 but, after 57 international appearances, it appears Klinsmann is looking to younger players as the 2006 World Cup hosts begin the countdown to the tournament with a friendly.

Arsenal's Jens Lehmann can also look forward to more consideration from the new coach than he has experienced under his predecessors with Klinsmann intending to shuffle the goalkeeper position in each friendly.

"We have taken three goalkeepers because I want to get a picture of the three players," he said.

"Since we have no pressure of qualifying, we can change the goalkeeper throughout the next games."
