Hammers face Camara action

14 April 2012

West Ham could be the target of a potentially costly compensation claim this week after Titi Camara began court proceedings against his former club.

The Hammers, who could have to pay a large fee to Reading if they still want Alan Pardew to take over from caretaker Trevor Brooking as manager at Upton Park, are facing a claim for damages from Camara for alleged breach of contract.

Company secretary Scott Duxbury said in a statement: "We are saddened that our association with a player has been soured by what we believe is a financially-motivated action.

"To date, no proceedings have been formally served so we are unable to comment on specific allegations.

"However, from the details that we have so far been given the club believes this action to be wholly without merit and we will vigorously defend any proceedings that are ultimately served."

Camara made just seven starts for the Hammers, who paid Liverpool £2.2 million for him in December 2000, and has never scored for the club.

Following West Ham's relegation from the Premiership last season, the Guinean striker's contract was terminated by mutual consent.
