Harrington takes first title on American soil

14 April 2012

Padraig Harrington picked up his first USPGA Tour title by beating world No2 Vijay Singh on the second hole of a play-off at the £2.75million Honda Classic in Florida.

Harrington, three times a runner-up on the tour, finally achieved his breakthrough after sinking a four-foot putt for par on the 18th hole while Fijian Singh missed from two feet.

Singh, Harrington and Joe Ogilvie finished level at 14-under-par 274. The American was eliminated on the first hole of the play-off.

"I thought it [Singh's putt at the second play-off hole] was a gimme," said Harrington. He became the first Irishman to win a USPGA Tour event.

Ernie Els fired a seven-under 65 to storm to a one-shot win over Sweden's Henrik Stenson at the Qatar Masters.
