Henin-Hardenne fit for Olympic challenge

14 April 2012

Justine Henin-Hardenne, the world No1, today declared herself fit to compete at this month's Olympics.

Henin-Hardenne has been out of tennis for most of the summer due to a viral infection. The 22-year-old Belgian has not played since losing in the second round of the French Open in May but said she had made "considerable progress" in the past two weeks.

Meanwhile, Mary Pierce defeated German Marlene Weingartner 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round of the Montreal Cup. Pierce remains a crowd favourite despite the fact she left Montreal as a child to live in France and has no memories of her time in Canada.

She said: "It's nice to come back to the city where I was born. The people gave me a warm welcome."
