Henman's pain in Spain

Tim Henman lost in the first round of the Madrid Masters in straight sets to American Mardy Fish today.

Following last week's return to form in Vienna, where he reached the semi-finals before falling to Carlos Moya, Henman lost the first set on a tiebreak against the US Davis Cup star and then surrendered the second 6-3.

Knowing a win would all but assure him a top-30 ranking and allow him to be seeded in the Australian Open next year, Henman's inconsistent serving proved his downfall.
